BAJRAMI SNATCHES TWENTE DRAW
Substitute Emir Bajrami snatched a last-gasp equaliser for FC Twente to ensure their clash at fellow Eredivisie title contenders AZ Alkmaar finished all 2-2.
Jozy Altidore twice put the hosts ahead at AFAS Stadion but Luuk de Jong cancelled out the early opener before Bajrami's late heroics nicked a point for the visitors.
The draw - between the sides who were second and third in the standings, respectively, at kick-off - meant champions Ajax retained pole position in the title race.
The home fans did not have to wait long for the opener, United States striker Altidore heading home an inswinging corner from Maarten Martens in the third minute.
Steve McClaren's side went close to equalising in similar fashion in the 20th minute, but Rasmus Bengtsson directed his header from Wesley Verhoek's corner over the bar.
The equaliser did arrive just after the half-hour, though, when De Jong capitalised on sloppy AZ defending to fire into the top-left corner from Nacer Chadli's knock-down.
Verhoek lashed narrowly wide of the left post seven minutes before the break but the teams went in at half-time level.
Niels Roseler had another sight of goal for the visitors three minutes after the break, only to send his right-footed effort from 20 yards high and wide.
Despite having created the better chances, Twente found themselves behind in the 71st minute. Altidore was again the man on target, producing a clinical finish after neat link-up play with Adam Maher.
AZ goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado had to be alert in the 81st minute to pluck a De Jong header from just under his bar.
The hosts almost stretched their lead to 3-1 three minutes from time when substitute Charlison Benschop let fly, but his drive flew inches wide of the right post.
And moments later they were pegged back, when Bajrami - a second-half replacement for Verhoek - headed home Chadli's left-wing cross to secure a dramatic draw for his side.
